Trump issues executive order on healthcare price transparency

President Donald Trump signed an executive order (EO) on Feb. 28 intended to reinforce a previous order from his first term that sought to increase transparency of healthcare prices. The 2019 EO requires hospitals and health plans to disclose certain pricing information for health services. While the EO became enforceable in 2022, most hospitals have not yet fully complied with it. The new order instructs the Departments of the Treasury, Labor, and Health and Human Services to develop a framework within 90 days to enforce the 2019 mandate. Hospitals and insurers also will be required to provide actual service prices, not estimates, and present the information in a standardized, easily comparable format across hospitals and health plans.
