HHS renews public health emergency to combat opioid crisis

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. renewed the public health emergency declaration for the nation’s opioid crisis, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to treating the crisis as a national security emergency. Originally declared in 2017, the renewal extends critical federal flexibilities for another 90 days, enabling continued coordination, research and treatment efforts. While CDC data shows a 25.5 percent decline in overdose deaths over the past year, synthetic opioids like fentanyl remain the leading cause of drug-related fatalities. The declaration allows HHS to expedite substance use disorder treatment initiatives and enhance public-private sector collaboration to save lives.
